Over 400 new trees planted at our school!

Over 400 trees were planted on site at Cheltenham Bournside School at the end of last term in an environmental project spearheaded by the student-led Eco Ministry. A team of 30 students from Year 7 to 9, helped by staff and volunteers from the Friends of Hatherley Park , worked together to plant the saplings at the front of the school field alongside Warden Hill Road in just one morning. The 420 trees planted were generously donated by The Woodland Trust ; a mixture of wildlife trees that will help to establish food and shelter for local wildlife, combined with year-round colour trees to allow students and the local community to enjoy beautiful blossoms and vibrant autumnal displays. Mrs Rigby, Assistant Head of Geography and staff lead of the Eco Ministry said, "The students have created something really special in planting these trees on our school site.

Bournside girls’ rugby team host and play their first EVER competitive game

History was made last week as Cheltenham Bournside School’s U13 girls r ugby team, ‘ The Bruisers ’, played in their first-ever competitive fixture. Cheltenham Bournside School hosted Five Acres High School in a friendly fixture, after two terms of training. The girls, all new to rugby, have been focusing on the core values of the game during their weekly training sessions; teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship. Coach, Miss Goddard, who coaches The Bruisers alongside Miss Savory, said; “This has been an ambition at the school for some time and it was a proud moment for the PE department to host and play our first game.

St Matthew’s Church Christmas Concert

The Cheltenham Bournside School music department held its annual Christmas Concert at St Matthew’s Church on Wednesday 15 th December, bringing together more than 90 students and their families to celebrate the festive season. Along with joyful congregational carols, there were performances from our talented Guitar Group, Jazz and Folk Bands, Youth Choir, Orchestra, Sixth Form Ensemble and Senior/Staff Singers, who performed traditional carols including Once in Royal David’s City , We Three Kings and O Holy Night , alongside modern pieces of music and prayers. Headteacher, Steve Jefferies, said: “One of our key values at Cheltenham Bournside School is for students to take pride in all they do and this enchanting concert was something of which we can feel extremely proud. Well done.” Head of Music, Matt Cutress said: "We were overjoyed as a music department to get back to St Matthew's Church for the Christmas Concert.

Boost Project

Over the past month students and staff at Cheltenham Bournside School have been working in partnership with Gloucestershire Constabulary on a pilot education project. The Constabulary created curriculum, called Boost, focuses on developing self-leadership qualities that are designed to help children become emotionally intelligent young adults . Students from Year 12 took part initially, with Year 12 volunteers then delivering the sessions to students in Year 8 with support from the Constabulary team. The creative delivery included sessions that involved the students using shaken coke bottles to represent anxiety and stresses building before hearing advice on how not to 'flip your lid', and all students were able to share how they manage their feelings by using a flashlight to indicate the strategy that works best for them.

‘Take one designer’, Alexander McQueen Fashion Museum workshop

Students in Year 10 created amazing surface embellishment work inspired by nature on a recent trip to Fashion Museum in Bath. Students were invited to explore and sketch surface embellishment and structures beneath and within clothing in a workshop called ‘Take One Designer – Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen’. The workshop was followed by a tour of the museum, exploring ‘A History of Fashion in 100 Objects’ - a major display celebrating fashion from the 1600s to the present day, referencing moments in history, as well as more personal stories. Finn invited to join GB Elite Training Squad

Year 13 student Finn Lusty, 18, has been invited to train with the Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby (GBWR) training squad after being put forward for the trial by his team at Gloucester Rugby Club . Finn, who has played for the Gloucester Wheelchair Rugby Club for four years, said, "It was brilliant to be able to focus on rugby for three days with the elite training squad. The camp was on top of a hill in the middle of nowhere, with no signal or WiFi so we were really able to focus on the game. The trial involved 6 hours of training and I now hope to taper into the team as I gain more experience." "In the future, I'd love to compete with the GBWR team and to win Olympic medals, but I'd also like to bring more eyes to the sport and make it mainstream.

Sixth Form students take artistic inspiration from London Galleries

Sixth Form students travelled to London last week, to draw inspiration from the London galleries and to enjoy the festive sights of the Capital. 58 students studying Fine Art, Photography, Graphics and 3D Art A levels went on the art trip in order to develop their artistic ideas in response to the work of others, and to experience the opportunity to engage first hand with a wide range of artworks and photography at the Tate Modern and the Tate Britain. Ahead of the trip, students were encouraged to research and plan projects relating to the artworks and architecture they would see in order to develop their portfolio of coursework. Chapel Arts Lunchtime Recital

In partnership with Chapel Arts and the Cheltenham Music Festival Society, music students at Cheltenham Bournside School presented a free lunchtime recital at Chapel Arts in the town centre on the 26 th November. Our Senior Singers opened the concert to a full house with Can’t Help Falling in Love , followed by Daisy singing My House and an elegant Saxophone solo from Sam who played Céline Mandarine . There were other excellent vocal solos from Archie singing Stars , Tobi singing Over the Mountain , Thomas singing Close Every Door and Mia singing There’s a Fine, Fine, Line . Instrument performances included Joe playing Blue Espresso on the guitar, Molly playing Dream and Luke playing Nuvole Bianche on the piano, Josh with Bugler’s Holiday on the Trumpet and Isobelle’s beautiful performance of Allegro Brilliant on the violin.

Every Christmas, students and staff at Cheltenham Bournside School pull together to support a range of local causes and charities. This year is no different, with a busy schedule of activities and events designed to support our local community. Advent Calendar Collection for The Pied Piper Trust Mr Stratford delivered more than 100 advent calendars collected by students and staff to the brilliant team at the Gloucester Royal Hospital Children's Centre ahead of the first day of Advent. The treats will be handed out to families in the hospital to spread a little festive cheer.
