English Lang & Lit

Welcome to Bournside Sixth Form! You are about to embark on a busy and important two years of sixth form study. Sixth form life is very different. You are going to feel much more independent, empowered and responsible for your own learning. The expectation is that this journey is down to you. You need to commit and relish in the challenge of sixth form life; ambition, belief and commitment are essential for your success. Listed below are activities for you to complete over the summer in preparation.

English Language and Literature Summer Bridging Work

Key Question
  • Do I understand the key plot points of A Streetcar Named Desire?

  • Do I understand how the historical and social contexts of the period influenced the production and reception of the play?

Resource List
  • A Streetcar Named Desire, Tennessee Williams – Penguin Classics Version

  • Voices in Speech and Drama, - Edexcel Anthology (provided by exam board)

  • Othello, William Shakespeare – Wordsworth Classics version

  • The Great Gatsby, F Scott Fitzgerald – Wordsworth Classics version

School copies of the above texts will be provided for lessons but we strongly recommend you get your own copies of each if you are able (except for the Voices anthology which will be given out for personal use) so that you can annotate them during class/revision.

Your Task
  • TASK 1: One of your main A-Level topics is ‘Voices in Drama’. For this topic, you will study the play ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ by Tennessee Williams. Using the links above as a starting point, conduct your own research into the world and society of 1940s New Orleans. What can you discover about the social, political and historical context that has shaped the text? Find out what influenced Williams in the writing of this play. Make your own notes. ·

  • TASK 2: Watch the National Theatre online version of the play, starring Gillian Anderson (The Fall, Sex Education) by using this link: Drama Online - A Streetcar Named Desire (dramaonlinelibrary.com)

If you have any questions, please email Mr Burnford, Head of English on jburnford@bournside.com
